Challenge Poverty Week
Alice Paul, ICFN Food Development worker, organised and assisted at four events to highlight healthy, low cost eating during this year’s Challenge Poverty Week (www.challengepoverty.net). Goodie bags of ‘store cupboard favourites’ were distributed to those attending.
Chef Stephen Paul, from West College Scotland, gave demonstations of how to cook Pea Soup and ‘Fake Away’ Stir Fries to staff, clients and volunteers at Parklea Branching Out and to staff and families at Rainbow Children’s Centre. Alice helped staff with a family event at Blairmore Nursery to make healthy pizza toppings which went down well with the children!
Community Chef Taylor Balling and manager Sally Clough led a cookery class for carers at Belville Community Garden, demonstrating basic knife skills as a foundation to cooking low-cost, nutritious recipes. Carers participated in making Carrot and Coriander soup and Fruit Salad. The classes will continue for 10 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are open to further partcipants. Contact Belville on 01475 726034 to take part or find about future cooking classes.
ICFN partners Branchton Community Centre, Grieve Road Pantry and Parklea Branching Out donated recipe items for some of the events. We are hoping to have more cooking demonstrations using freshly grown produce and zero waste items from our partners. Please get in touch if you would be interested in holding or particpating in an event.
