Another month of sunshine and everything growing well with harvests of salad leaves, kale, spinach, radish, peas strawberries and herbs across the nurseries and community gardens. Can’t quite believe we are half way through the year already!
Fantastic visits to Newark, St. John’s, Aileymill, Gibshill, Wemyss Bay, Whinhill and Hillend early learning centres across the month where we engaged the children with a healthy shopping activity, putting together all the ingredients for a coconut milk, spinach and lentil curry. We asked the children to identify the ingredients through sight and smell and talked about where they grow before giving them each a bag to fill along with a recipe. Each centre had 20 bags to give to families to encourage them to cook with the children and try a meat free recipe. We also helped with the gardens, weeding, pulling radishes and strawberries and finally chatted over a vegetable garden jigsaw puzzle!
As well as shopping and prepping for our recipe bags, we did our weekly Lidl excess food pick up for Belville and coffee grounds from the Alchemist (for the compost). We suppported Parklea, Craigend and The Drying Green with weekly gardening and watering. Broomhill gardens shared some excess vegetable plants with us which were shared across the gardens.
