A month of sunshine kicked off with visits to Whinhill and St.John’s nurseries, planting seeds and flowers with the children in their garden beds. We delivered a growing kit of compost and peas, beans, lettuce, spinach, leeks, carrots and radish seeds, marigolds and calendula to several more of Inverclyde nurseries across the month.
It was fantastic to see that some of the children had remembered how to plant seeds and take flowers carefully out of pots from our previous sessions. We also had reports from staff about children who had made daily checks on flowers from our last visit and made sure they were watered. We had some more great conversations about growing, vegetables and food with the children! Potatoes were growing well and getting topped up with compost - looking forward to seeing the harvests!
Our weekly support at Craigend and Parklea continued - planting up, watering, weeding and harvesting with volunteers. Lots of salad and radishes used in the new Parklea cafe and tomatoes planted up in gro-bags.
Herbs and flowers were planted up at Port Glasgow Health Centre beds and the Women’s Aid garden was weeded and planted up with herbs, vegetable seeds, sunflowers and hanging baskets.
Continued with a weekly pick-up of excess food from Lidl to support Belville - lots of fruit was given to nurseries and the rest distributed at Belville’s food share and used in their community meal.
We held our monthly Moveable Feast at Rainbow Children’s Centre. This time, we served tomato soup (made with excess supermarket tomatoes), a range of healthy sandwiches and wraps and lots of fruit and yoghurt. Families ate together or took home to eat later. Thanks to all who came along!
Looking forward to seeing how all the nursery gardens grow over the next month and planning started on summer activities! Can’t quite believe we are nearly half way through the year already!
