January ‘25

The start of a new year of growing and cooking kicked off with work in our community gardens tidying and planning for seed sowing. We are re-using old compost from Parklea to mulch beds and planters in the nursery schools and community gardens, as well as washing old pots to make up kits to give out to nurseries and the community.

We attended a great apple tree pruning workshop at Parklea with Lynsey from ‘Apple Tree Man’ - if you need advice on pruning, please let us know!

Our community chefs have started new cooking workshops across Inverclyde. Alice helped Angela and Jenna at Auchmountain Community Centre with a group of Asylum seekers, who had a great time in the kitchen! If you are interested in taking part in a cooking workshop, please get in touch! We also have opportunities to train as a community chef, funded by HSPC, so let us know if that is of interest too!

We have made up over 100 soup bags that were given to PG25, The Trust, Inverclyde Food Bank, Kinship Craers, Greenock Library fridge and Branchton Community Centre. This month’s recipe is for Leek and Potato soup.

We have written our second monthly column for the Greenock Telegraph, with a recipe for a simple, cheap and protein filled Chickpea and Tomato pasta. Look out for our next column due out on February 22nd!

Planning for our next Moveable Feast is underway. This free, 3 course community meal will be held at Auchmountain Community Centre on Thursday 27th February 4-6pm. It is a drop-in, so no need to book. If you or a friend, family member or neighbour would benefit from the meal and the social outing but have no transport, please get in touch! We can organise pick up/drop off.

Lastly, we have been on a Diabetes awareness talk. We didn’t realise quite what a problem this is for Inverclyde. Eating healthy, nutritionally dense vegetables and pulses can really help people with Type 2. If you have diabetes and would like us to help with meal planning or cooking advice then please let us know.

Snowdrops are out and green life is popping up in the gardens. The nights are getting a little lighter and we are all looking forward to the next couple of months of prepping for this year’s growing. If you would like us to help get you growing at home, then please give us a call!
